Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of nutrient solution temperature and pH on nitrate content and activities of nitrate reductase and glutamine synthetase of leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and water dropwort (Oenanthe stolonifera DC.) grown with hydroponics. The fresh weight of both crops was higher at 20¡É and 25¡É than at any other nutrient solution temperature, and was the lowest at 15¡É in spring culture. Nitrate reductase activity at 15¡É was lower about 30% than that of 20¡É in both crops. Glutamine synthetase activity as affected by solution temperature showed the same trend as nitrate reductase activity. The optimal pH range was 6 for leaf lettuce and 6-7 for water dropwort. Nitrate content was highest at pH 6 in leaf lettuce, and at pH 7 in water dropwort. Nitrate reductase and glutamine synthetase activities showed the same trend as nitrate.
